There are so many ways in which volunteers can contribute to the lives of people in Soibada.   While there are some specific skills that we are looking for at the moment there are also many other ways people can help.  Some volunteers contribute their time regularly while others make small commitments when they are able.   Being a part of the Pittwater Friends of Soibada doesn't mean that you have to make the journey to Timor Leste (although the opportunity is there if you would like to) there are many other ways that you can become involved with the communities in Soibada.   If you are part of a school community there are opportunities to connect with Sister Schools in Soibada.  Local church groups have connections with parishes in Soibada.  Clubs and community groups have involvement.  Local businesses have made contributions to our friendships and individuals can contribute in all sorts of ways.

Ways you can help in Pittwater:
  • Become a member of Pittwater Friends of Soibada - we meet once per month
  • Attend our fundraising functions - find out about upcoming events
  • Be part of an Event Management Team and host our fundraising functions
  • Be part of your school's Soibada Sister Schools Program
  • Please help with fundraising for the Training Centre and High School buildings.  Promote the “Buy a brick” campaign.
  • Join the medical team - We need volunteer doctors (preferably specialists) and nurses to travel to Soibada in this coming October and July next year.
  • We need someone to assist with the water project in the orphanage.
  • Donate money to buy a book for the Literacy Program or donate your old books to raise money for the program
  • Make your next wine purchase from The Wine Point
  • Help with website management and/or publicity.
  • Join the Avalon knitters group who supply blankets and warm clothing to Soibada residents
  • We are looking for laptops in good working condition for the Principals and teachers in the schools in Soibada.
  • Find out how your local club or organisation can make connections in Soibada. Email us
  • Make a donation to help fund our projects that help the people of Soibada

Ways you can help by traveling to Soibada with the group:

Pittwater Friends of Soibada visit Timor Leste twice each year.  One trip is made in July, (usually closely after the end of the NSW school holidays) and another trip is made in October.  We are limited to the time of year that we travel as there is a river crossing to reach Soibada that closes off the road during the wet season (8 months of the year).

The projects that have been undertaken whilst in Soibada are quite varied.  There are a number of building projects underway and we do need people with building experience to liaise with local builders and sponsors (we usually don't undertake building works ourselves).   The water sanitisation projects are continuing.  Volunteers have helped train Soibada residents to enable them to create small businesses, they have conducted dance workshops, installed gardens, bee hives, craft workshops and many other items.  If you have a skill there will often be a way that you could utilise it in Soibada.

Following is a list of skills that we are particularly looking for but we welcome volunteers in any capacity.  If you are interested in joining us please send us an email through the links on this page, call us or come along to our next meeting.

We are particularly looking for people with skills in the following areas:

We desperately need volunteer doctors (preferably specialists) to travel to Soibada in July and October 2016. Refer to our Medical Projects Page.

If you have building knowledge or qualifications we are looking for people to assist with liaison between our partners and builders in Soibada.
